NYC Midnight hosts eight writing challenges throughout the year. Their 100-Word Microfiction Contest draws thousands of writers worldwide to participate in a multi-round, scored elimination. The contest? Write a compelling 100-word microfiction story in 48 hours.

Writers are grouped into cohorts who receive the same prompt. This year, my cohort had roughly 40 writers, and we received the prompt: a romantic comedy, using a power drill, mull.

The 100-word format is a drabble. Yes, it’s about brevity, but it’s also about conveying meaning.

I wanted my work to stand out, so I wrote a story concerning a polyamorous FFM (Female Female Male) triad rather than a monogamous cishet couple.

Synopsis: A polyamorous FFM makes a door into the master bath for Hannah.

My story didn’t place or move on to the next round.

Still, it was my first NYC competition and fun to do. The feedback I received was positive.

I must admit I have much to learn about writing drabbles, but I believe they feel more like poetry than prose. My story was prose. Next time, I may try to edge more the other way.
