7th Writing Playground Challenge

It’s 1609, somewhere in the Mediterranean.

The Nossa Senhora da Conceição plows across the churning sea to meet the rising sun, and Captain João da Silva faces a crisis of conscience that keeps him from sleep.

In the 7th Writing Playground Challenge, we were challenged to produce a 3,000-word story in under a week.

The story could be of any genre incorporating two optional and one required story elements.

For my story, Blessings of the Drowned Prophet, I chose a pirate ship for the setting and included an insomniac character; an earthquake is the required element.

My exhausted Captain da Silva keeps a Cardinal prisoner and invites the priest to his quarters to make a deal with God.

Results won’t be in for months, but we’ll see where good winds and calm seas might take us!

Update: Dec 29, 2023

The story didn’t place or receive an honorable mention, but I received great feedback from Writer’s Playground. I’m proud of the piece and think I see areas where I can make improvements. Always more to do! Onward and upward!
