NYCM Flash Fiction Challenge 2024

It’s that time again! The NYC Midnight Flash Fiction Challenge 2024 is up and running.

We had 48 hours to produce a 1,000-word flash fiction story.

This time around, 3,258 writers participated in 90 groups, with approximately 36 writers per group.

Overall enrollment seems down, likely due to this contest’s cost (~$62). It was likely too rich for many’s blood. I hope that works to my favor.

My prompts were fun: a Comedy (Genre), a Glacier (Setting), and a Seatbelt (Object).

I haven’t written a comedy for an NYCM before so that’s new on me.

My idea for the story came pretty fast, and I had the whole thing drafted in a few hours. I revised it throughout the weekend and submitted it mid-day Sunday.

Per the contest terms, I can’t talk about or identify my story in any way, so I’ll have to wait until the results are out to elaborate, but I had a super great time with it. Hope to tell you more soon!

The results are in!

My story, Skyward Horizons 424, placed 12th in my cohort in Round 1.

I'm thrilled and excited to score some points moving into Round 2 this weekend.

It’s an Airplane-style comedy set in the Great White North.

A 787 is in distress and descends rapidly, threatening to collide with the terrain and kill everyone onboard.

Everything that happens to the plane — cabin doors flying off, trapped co-pilots in chairs, engine manifolds ripping apart, and Lithium-Cobalt batteries catching fire — happened to Boeing planes in real life.

I’ll be circulating a free sampler of this story in my August 2024 newsletter. Subscribe today, get a free ebook, and watch your inbox for a crash landing full of action and fun!
